Not Sure What to Do with That? How to Spot Items Worth Consigning

Before we dive in: if you’re already thinking about consigning, there’s an exclusive offer waiting for you at the bottom of this post.

There’s a moment in almost every decluttering project when you hold something up and think, This is too nice to donate, but I’m not going to use it again. Maybe it’s

  • a designer bag in good condition
  • a watch from a relationship that ended
  • a coat you loved but haven’t touched in three years

You don’t have to just give it away. Many of these items have a real market value, and getting them to the right buyer can be simpler than you’d expect.

Here’s a practical guide to identifying what’s worth consigning and what the process actually looks like.

When you’re sorting through a closet or a home, run every item through a simple mental filter: Would I feel bad dropping this in a donation bin? If the answer is yes—if the item feels like it has real value beyond a tax receipt—that’s a signal worth paying attention to.

Consignment is the middle path between keeping something you don’t use and letting it go for nothing. It returns real dollars to the person doing the decluttering, which often makes the emotional part of letting go much easier.

You might be surprised by what does and does not have a strong second-life market. A few categories people often underestimate:

  • Designer handbags and small leather goods
This is one of the strongest resale categories, full stop. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, and Bottega Veneta hold value remarkably well, even styles that are years old. Condition influences the price you can get for it, but even well-loved bags often find buyers.
  • Fine jewelry, including pieces without a brand name
Unbranded gold (10k and above), platinum, and palladium jewelry has intrinsic material value. Pieces don’t need to be signed by a designer to be worth consigning. Grandma’s gold chain, an old engagement ring, and estate pieces are all worth a look.
  • Watches
Luxury watches from recognized manufacturers—Rolex, Cartier, Omega, IWC, and others—are among the most liquid items in the resale market. If you find one sitting in a drawer, it almost certainly belongs in the consign pile.
  • Designer clothing—contemporary brands, not just legacy luxury
People often assume consignment is only for Hermès and Chanel. In reality, brands like Vince, Theory, Ralph Lauren, Alice & Olivia, and many contemporary labels have active buyer markets. If it’s in good condition and from a brand with a following, it may be worth consigning.
  • Men’s clothing, shoes, and accessories
This is an often-overlooked category. Tailored suits from quality makers, dress shoes from Ferragamo or Church’s, outerwear from Loro Piana or Canada Goose all have real resale markets. Don’t leave men’s items on the table during a whole-home cleanout.
  • Designer kids’ items
Kids outgrow clothes quickly, which means designer children’s pieces are often in near-perfect condition. Burberry, Bonpoint, Ralph Lauren, and similar brands have dedicated buyers in the resale market.

Signs an Item Probably Isn’t a Consignment Candidate

Not everything makes the cut, and it’s helpful to know what to set aside. Generally, items that are heavily worn or damaged, from fast fashion retailers, or without a recognizable brand and no precious materials are better suited for donation. A good rule of thumb: If you’d hesitate to gift it to someone you know, it’s probably not a consignment candidate.

What the Consignment Process Actually Looks Like

One of the most common barriers is simply not knowing what happens next. The process at The RealReal is designed to require very little from the consignor:

  • Send or schedule a pickup
Use a prepaid shipping label or, for larger consignments, schedule an in-home pickup with an expert—no fee, no sorting or listing required on your end.
  • Authentication and pricing
A team of experts evaluates every item, confirms authenticity, and sets a price based on market data.
  • Professional photography and listing
Everything is photographed and listed to a marketplace of millions of buyers—nothing is required from you.
  • You get paid
Once items sell, proceeds are deposited to your account.

Final Note

The decluttering process is about making space—both physically and mentally. When the items you’re releasing have real value, finding them the right next home isn’t just practical. It’s the better ending to their story.
