Summer Update from NAPO President Susie Hayman

When we think of summer, we often think of relaxation, vacation, fun and a time for reflection. All of these things provide us with the opportunity to slow down, disconnect, experience something new and dream about our future. However, do we take advantage of what summer has to offer and afford ourselves the time to enjoy it? Do we give ourselves permission to take a break from our work and our commitments? Probably not.

As I sit in the comfort of my air-conditioned office responding to NAPO emails and planning a client session for tomorrow, I ask myself – what would happen if I disappeared for a few days and did ONLY what I wanted to do? I’m fairly good at setting boundaries when I’m on vacation; however, I don’t always practice what I preach. I tell my clients to carve out “me time” and I tell NAPO volunteers to “de-NAPOtize,” yet when it comes to me, it’s not so easy. I have to consciously make a promise to myself.

So, this weekend, in celebration of my husband’s and my milestone birthdays, we’ve planned a getaway with our daughter and her significant other. My goal is to enjoy the company and time together, while letting the rest of the world turn without us.

As we hit mid-summer, I encourage and challenge each of you to take some time for yourself and experience something you enjoy. Whether it’s reading a book, watching a movie, turning your phone off or taking a trip down memory lane, just do it. Your work, your life, and NAPO will still be there when you return.

Here’s to a summer that brings value to all of us!

Warm regards from RVA,

Susie Hayman
