Information is Power in Your Email Marketing Strategy

In this week’s episode of Stand Out, How To Grow Your Organizing and Productivity Business, host Sarah Karakaian talks with marketing expert Theresa Condict. Are you making the most of your email lists and email marketing programs? Are you reaching your audience with valuable content they respond to? Most importantly, are you mining the data? Email marketing is effective in part because there is plenty of data to analyze. Knowing what measurements to look for and what is most important are keys to great email marketing.

In their conversation, Sarah and Theresa talked about the important elements of a successful email campaign. Theresa made the point that like all marketing, email marketing begins with a smart strategy. She went on to talk about the power of not only having data but also understanding how it can inform and improve your email marketing efforts.

Theresa described the variety of email marketing analytics that matter and how tracking them consistently will help you maximize both your budget and your results. One of the key points she made was the critical difference between open versus click rates.

One of the more surprising parts of the conversation was when Theresa talked about the importance of actually purging people from your mailing list. When someone has not opened your emails or interacted with them in any way for a period of time, continuing to email them is actually detrimental to the success of your efforts. Fortunately, Theresa also had some suggestions on how to grow your list with readers who will actually engage with your efforts. She also cautioned against buying lists and shared some of the reasons why that is not a best practice.

Having a bad list will also impact your bounce rates. Theresa explained the differences between soft and hard bounces and how they impact your site’s traffic.

One of the best ways to grow your list is to offer something of value that someone visiting your website or social channels would be interested in downloading. You’ve probably been on the other side of this tactic many times and downloaded an ebook, audio file, newsletter or something else of value. You would do the same thing — in exchange for their email address, they can access your offering.
